Graphic Design Studio 1

My Awesome Classmates
Textbook

Graphic Design Studio 1 class is my very first graphic design class. When I registered for the class, I thought I’ll only be learning how to make things look prettier and I was wrong. Now after two exercises and working on the third one, I realized that what the class actually taught me is how to be a better planner and how to communicate my message effectively to my readers. There has to be intentionality in things we are designing, and not randomness. The textbook for the class, has also equipped me with the basic elements of graphic design, hence the title of the textbook, "The Elements of Graphic Design".

Below are some of the reading assignments that I’ve done for the class.

Some of the important terms that I have learned from this class are (definition is from the textbook glossary):

  • Abstraction: Making non-representational, non-literal, generally increasing an object’s visibility.

  • Balance: A state of equilibrium, whether by symmetry or weighted asymmetry.

  • Font: A set of characters that share common characteristics. Also called Typeface.

  • Legibility: The ability to distinguish between letterforms; the recognizability of an object for what it is, easy to read, clear, plain.

  • Organic relationship: Design relationships that are found and exploited between the specific elements at hand.

  • Readability: The quality and experience of reading, determined by letterspacing, linespacing, paper-and-ink contrast, among other factors.

  • Typeface: A set of characters of a certain design and bearing its own name.
